A Master Storyteller

Sharing Secrets on Funding Creativity on the IBPA Podcast

This week, I had the chance to join the Independent Book Publishers Association for their first podcast episode of the year, and it honestly felt like a full-circle moment for me.

I had such a great conversation with host Christopher about how creators can find funding for their work—and I shared the story behind Shero’s Geeky Grants & Gigs, which actually grew directly out of this very newsletter you’re reading.

Since launching Geeky Grants & Gigs as its own Substack on December 12, the response has been incredible. We’re about to hit 700 subscribers, and every Friday I share grants, gigs, opportunities, and internships for creatives working across film, gaming, writing, and the arts.

And here’s the part that made me smile the most: last Friday, I found out I won a small grant that I originally shared in the list back in December. That funding is now allowing me to partner with an amazing nonprofit in South Central Los Angeles to host a workshop for young Black girls focused on the history of textured hair. As many of you know, Chapter 3 of Young Grandmaster Choi centers on Rayven discovering her power through her 4C hair — so this project feels especially close to my heart.

On the IBPA podcast, I also talked about how I’ve funded my creative career through grants, shared practical tips on how to win them, and where to find them (yes… including my own newsletter 😉).
